YLS Offers Volunteer Opportunities

Young Leaders Society members have the opportunity to engage in volunteer activities in our community on a regular basis, including participating in specific YLS projects or as a part of bigger projects like Day of Action.

Leaphart Place - 2008-2009 YLS Volunteer Project

About Leaphart Place

The mission of Leaphart Place is to provide safe, stable and supportive housing for young adults.  Leaphart Place provides housing and services to young adults with disabilities who were formally in out-of-home care, homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Potential applicants must meet disability, income and homelessness (6 SHP apartments) eligibility requirements.  Leaphart Place, located at 2819 Leaphart Road in West Columbia, provides 20 one bedroom permanent housing units for young adults at least 18 years of age.  Tenants are offered supportive services based on a case management model.  Services are provided on-site and coordinated off-site with other community service providers.  The services provided help residents to develop the skills necessary to maintain their housing, permanently.  Leaphart Place is an alcohol, drug and violence-free community.  Leaphart Place provides equal opportunity in employment and provision of services to all individuals regardless of race, religion, color, gender, pregnancy, age, national origin, ancestry, disability, and status as Vietnam-era veteran, marital status, sexual orientation, status in regard to public assistance or any other legally protected status.

Day of Action

For United Way of the Midlands Day of Action on September 26, 2008, YLS members got to work by helping to build a fence around the perimeter of the Leaphart Place facility in order to increase security for their residents. Volunteers also assisted with some much needed landscape work on the property grounds.
